Feast Day of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

Feast Day of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

Today is the day we recognize the patron saint of our church.

Matthew was approached by Jesus and told to lay down his lucrative position as tax collector and follow him.  Matthew, without hesitation, did as Jesus requested.

We know less about Matthew than some of the other apostles.  He obviously lived a fairly long life because we know his gospel was written at least twenty years after Jesus' death.  Tradition states that Matthew stayed in Jerusalem for about 15 years and then went as a missionary to the Persians, Parthians and Medes.  We have no definite information about his death, but legend states that he eventually died as a martyr in Ethiopia.
